Technology in the 1600s-1750s (warfare)

During the 17th century, the English began migrating toward America to find religious freedom. The English settled in Jamestown, Virginia.  At the time, Indians were also trying to settle in America. They began to attack the English. In order to protect themselves they used both the “flintlock” and the “matchlock” rifles. Which were major advancements to technology in the 1600s-1750s and made a major difference in warfare.

The guns which were common in the beginning of the English Civil War were still bulky and heavy, but were easier to load, and there were ways to make it easier to manage. They had forks attached to one end were used to support the guns’ weight. Towards the end of the Civil War the “matchlock” came into active service. The gun was bulky, had medium accuracy, and could only be fired once to twice a minute. Invented in the late 1600s, the flintlock stands today as the lock type that can posses the most. When the trigger is pulled, a hammer holding a piece of flint would fall forward, striking a piece of steel, shaving off sparking shards of metal, allowing them to fall into a small powder charge which, when ignited, lit off the main powder charge in the barrel."flintlock"

This is a picture of the “flintlock”. When the trigger is pulled, a hammer holding a piece of flint would fall forward, striking a piece of steel, shaving off sparking shards of metal, allowing them to fall into a small powder charge and  when it is ignited, it lit off the main powder charge in the barrel. The main parts of the “flintlock” are the flint, pan, hammer, trigger, frizzen and frizzen spring.  It was the was the first lock type to be heavily manufactured. It is used till this day, for hunting.

Both the “flintlock” and the “matchlock” rifles were major advancements in technology in the 17th century. They helped us win their nation battles. It helped us colonize America, win the Civil War and helped make our military one of the best in the world.  We were as strong as were because of these early technological advancements. Both of these weapons made a major difference to our nations’ warfare and were used in conflicts for years and years.

  1. mlmuntz says:

“At the time, Indians were also trying to settle in America”–this is not accurate, the Native Americans had been here for thousands of years.
“They helped us win their nation battles”–This sentence is unclear.
